Germany will provide 337.20 million euro to Bangladesh for implementing projects in different sectors including energy and climate change

Three bilateral agreements have been signed on 14th January (Sunday) between the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany on Technical Cooperation-2016, Financial Cooperation-2016 and Financial Cooperation 2016 (Saidabad-III). Kazi Shofiqul Azam, Secretary, Economic Relations Divisions, Ministry of Finance of Bangladesh and Dr. Thomas Prinz, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bangladesh signed the agreements on behalf of the two governments. The signing ceremony was attended by high officials from the German Embassy in Dhaka, KfW, GIZ and the Government of Bangladesh.

Under the agreement on Technical Cooperation-2016, a total amount of 31,000,000 euro (thirty-one million euro) shall be available as contribution for the following projects:

  1. Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme
  2. Energy Efficiency and Integration of Solar Energy into the Grid
  3. Prison and Justice Reform for Promoting Human Rights and Preventing Corruption
  4. Promotion of Social and Environmental Standards in Industry, Phase III
  5. Adaptation of Climate Change into National and Local Development Planning, Phase II
  6. Improved Coordination of International Climate Finance
  7. National Adaptation Plan and Nationally Determined Contribution Support Programme
  8. Study and Expert Fund

Under the Financial Cooperation-2016, an amount of 216.20 million euro will be available as loan and contribution on  (1) IDCOL (2 projects for renewable energy), (2) Modernization of Energy Distribution - Smart Grid Phase I, (3) Climate Change-Adapted Urban Development Programme, Phase II,  and (4) Financial contribution for attendant measures. Signing of bilateral agreements between Bangladesh and Germany, January 2018 Enlarge image Signing of bilateral agreements between Bangladesh and Germany, January 2018 (© Press Section, German Embassy, Dhaka) An amount of 90 million euro will be available as loan for the project Climate Change Adapted Drinking, Water Resources Management Dhaka (Saidabad Water Treatment Plant Project, Phase III) .The implementing agencies of the projects are Power Division, Local Government Division, WASA and the Ministry of Environment and Forest.

Germany has been providing financial and technical assistance for the socio-economic development of Bangladesh since 1972. It has a long standing history in supporting Bangladesh’s economic infrastructure, health sector, poverty alleviation, good governance and human rights, power transmission and renewable energy, climate change adaptation, study and other issues. Through these, Germany pursues unique policies in its assistance programme for the development of Bangladesh. The present agreements are the continuation of development cooperation between the two countries.
